Overhead Bare Conductor sizing calculation : Overhead bare conductors are used for many applications. One of the application is to use them for flow of current from one place to another. Many sizes and types of overhead conductors are availale - they can be categorised in two basic types - stranded and solid. For stranded conductors the conductor is made of many strands of Aluminium and steel or Aluminium alloy. Since the tensile strength of Aluminium is poor, aluminium metal is mixed with other metals to form an alloy which present a better tensile strenth and witout sacrificing much the current carrying capacity of the Aluminium. Based on theconstruction of the conductor, they are further categorised as ACSR (Al. conductor steel reinforced), AAC (Al. alloy conductor), AAAC (All AL. alloy conductor) etc. To further increase the tensile strength of the aluminium conductors, steel sores are used in Transmission lines where the span of the conductor varies between approx. 150m to 350m. Sizing of the conductor is very important to check whether the required amount of power can flow through it at the given voltage. Th size of the conductor should be such that 1) Heat generated due to flow of current + heat absorbed due to solar radiation is equal to heat dissipated through convection and radiation, 2) Voltage drop should be within tolerable limits 3) The conductor size shall be sufficient to withstand the system short circuit current for 1 sec or 3 sec based on protection scheme. Satcon is providing such conductor selection services for almost two decades in various projects. Satcon's senior engineers are regularly doing such exercises and thus have gained sufficient expertise to deliver easily, quickly and at compititive rates.
